![]() ![]() I go into the download center and print activity worksheets that go directly along with the puzzles. Lately, we’ve been focusing on one puzzle (or short vowel sound) per week. It’s pretty much a free on-line workbook you print and use as you like. Here you can print activities for each of the sections. They are very heavy-duty and are cleverly color-coded on the back so the pieces don’t get mixed up. Each of the five jigsaw puzzles focuses on a short-vowel sound by displaying words in “tags” attached to various objects. We have the Starfall Phonics puzzle set (see right). Here you can find hard-copies of most of the books from the site along with several other supplementary materials. There are a couple of other great parts of the website for parents : Here there are longer books and games in various subsections: Three Little Plays, Fiction and Nonfiction, Comics, Folk Tales, Greek Myths, and Chinese Fables. They describe it as the section which transitions children from learning to read to reading to learn. It’s got subsections where children begin to practice their new-found reading skills : All About Me, Art Gallery, Magic, Music, Poetry, Tongue Twisters, and Bird Riddles. Madeline and I have only begun to explore this section. There are also some fun movies in this section. Madeline loves to read the page and then look for the spot so she can click and watch the picture do something fun. So after the child does activities with “an” and “at,” they read “Zac the Rat.” Then they move on to blending “en” and “et” and read “Peg the Hen.” Unlike paper books, these books have special spots you can click to animate the picture. This section starts to blend letters and has a book for each level. The end of the “a” book has an activity where the child sorts capital and lowercase “a’s” into the correct baskets. (Which terrifically entertains my two kids.) When the child is ready to turn the page, the short “a” sound is repeated. Sometimes the picture then dances, sings, or giggles. When the child clicks on the sparkly letter “a” in each picture, they hear the short “a” sound and the name of the object in the picture is pronounced. For example the A “book” as they call it, has pictures of things starting with the letter “a” on each page. In this section, each letter has it’s own set of activities. There are four main sections to the site: They learn how to navigate between pages, drag and drop with the mouse, and yes, on occasion, wait patiently for a page to load – all key skills for today’s world. In addition to the tremendous phonics foundation that it lays, it also gets kids acquainted with using the computer. eh, eh” or “The silent ‘e’ at the end of the word makes the vowel long” around the house all day long!) It builds concept upon concept by using great graphics, clear pronunciations of each letter and word, fun interactive games, and terrific teaching songs. I have just begun my journey as a home-schooling mom, but after a couple of months of comparing this site to a $150 Kindergarten phonics curriculum, I definitely prefer Starfall. Anyone with pre-school to first-grade children should check out this FREE educational resource. Koenig is also investigating the case and reveals her findings to the listeners as they happen.īy the time the twelfth and final episode of Season 1 was released on December 19, Serial had become the fastest podcast to hit 5 million downloads, and was ranked in Apple's top 10 podcasts list globally. Woven throughout Koenig's narration are recorded interviews with people who knew Hae and Adnan, recordings from the trial, police recordings from interviews, as well as phone interviews with Adnan himself, calling from the maximum-security prison he's spent most his adult life in. In each episode host Sarah Koenig focuses on various aspects of the case, such as the prosecution's timeline of the alleged murder or the suspicious circumstances in which Hae Min's body was found. Adnan has always maintained his innocence and his family insists he was wrongfully convicted, based on a poor legal defense from his lawyer and a relatively flimsy prosecution: there was no direct evidence tying him to the murder, and he was largely convicted on the testimony of a single witness. The first season began on October 3, 2014, focusing on the Real Life case of a man named Adnan Syed who was accused and convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in January 1999. As the name would suggest, the show slowly explores the details of a story week by week, in a serial format, gradually unraveling the details of the case. Serial is a weekly Documentary-style podcast focusing on non-fiction stories, hosted by Sarah Koenig. (The Mongols didn't really sweep across Western Europe after reaching Vienna, if memory serves.) You're almost guaranteed to learn something about world history along the way, even if the developers do take a few liberties. Winning is rarely as simple as conquering a single enemy base you may have to forge tenuous alliances, escort vulnerable units to fortified locations, traverse battlefields without provoking enemy attacks or build castles in strategic choke points. The campaigns are my favorite part of Age of Empires II, as the scenarios and objectives can vary significantly from scenario to scenario. Then, you'll lead that leader's forces through an increasingly difficult series of battles, exploring some of their most famous real-world conflicts along the way. In each campaign, you'll take control of a famous military leader, such as Joan of Arc, Attila the Hun, Vlad "Dracula" Tepes, Tariq ibn Ziyad and Tamerlane. (I'd estimate it's somewhere between 80 and 100 hours, but the bottom line is that it's a lot.) The developers estimate that these campaigns alone could provide up to 200 hours of content. While you could easily play random-map and multiplayer games for dozens of hours and be perfectly happy with Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, it's worth pointing out that the game contains 21 historical campaigns. Granted, high-level players will want to micromanage their armies to a great degree anyway, but having to babysit a large army while besieging an enemy base, defending a home base, and continuing to build your economy and replace units as needed can be an incredibly difficult juggling act. Left to their own devices, units are terrible at navigating through tight spaces, and they target enemy units and buildings haphazardly. This part of Age of Empires has long been a subject of derision it's a little better than it was before but still problematic. There is only one big area of the game that hasn't seen many improvements: the pathfinding. At the top of the screen, you can see every technology you're researching and every unit you're producing, and you can get back to the relevant building at the touch of a button. You can queue up technology and units at the same time, rather than having to micromanage them separately. You can program complex routes for your scouts. You can create "action queues" so that builders can go right back to gathering resources once they're done with construction. ![]() You can set villagers to automatically replant farms. The gameplay is just as riveting now as it was back in 1999, but it's much more straightforward, thanks to a bevy of quality-of-life improvements. Expect lots of farms, lumber camps, gold mines, swordsmen, knights, crossbowmen, battering rams, trebuchets and wonders of the world along the way. Either way, the game flow is the same: Create villagers, gather resources, upgrade your technology, build up an army, and either attack your foe or defend your own base, depending on your play style. You usually start with a semi-established base in campaign missions. You begin with a town center, a handful of villagers and a scout cavalryman in random-map and multiplayer games. Each race also has unique units, which can range from horsemen who tear buildings apart to infantrymen who can attack from a distance. As you can imagine, finding your favorite race takes some trial and error. If you don't like those choices, don't worry: There are 32 others. ![]() ![]() It also needs hacks to make it an equally viable core, you eventually being able to zip around multiple times. The other cores aren’t slouches, either, though I must admit that I wasn’t too keen on CHARGE overall, it requiring a lot of foresight so you don’t teleport into a bad situation. It’s hard to describe just how satisfying the katana is to use in MIND CONTROL DELETE, especially when you have a bevy of hacks backing it up. For RECALL, the best core of the lot, you can unlock a hack that will send your katana hurtling through multiple enemies, while another hack lets you recall the katana while striking every red guy on its way back to your hand. Luckily for you, random hacks appear at intervals throughout nodes and they range from simply refilling your hearts right the way up to completely changing the effectiveness of your cores. ![]() It’s more than a little tense when you are crawling your way to the finish line of an especially long node with just one heart left. While the extra comfort blanket might sound like it makes the game easier, it really doesn’t when these gauntlets get longer and with wilder stipulations than the original. ![]() You are given two hearts by default to make your way through a series of levels in a node with, and should you fail, you will then have to start the gauntlet over, this time with different levels. In perhaps the most substantial change from the formula, SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE isn’t a one-hit kill game for everyone involved any more. CHARGE pretty much teleports you to an enemy and punches them in the face, RECALL lets you return a thrown katana to your hand, HOTSWITCH returns from the original and sees you changing bodies with a red guy, while MORE gives you more hearts to get through the gauntlet of levels with. These cores mix things up in a huge way, each basically acting as a different superpower that you need to tactically use due to their cooldown. Where MIND CONTROL DELETE changes things up most dramatically is in the new skills it gives you, coming mainly in the form of cores. It takes a minute to get used to and understand the beats of the action, but it’s hard to step back once you do, dashing around after planning your digital murder spree way in advance. Enemies move very slowly while you are static before speeding up when you do anything, making each level feel like a chessboard in slow motion. Even though I have already played SUPERHOT to death on Xbox One and Switch, as well as a worrying amount of time in VR via PlayStation VR, the bullet time brilliance never really gets old for me. ![]() The main hook of SUPERHOT remains as potent and addictive as ever. It’s not quite a full-fledged sequel, it instead being a continuation of the first game where you try to stop being assimilated by an AI all while enjoying the new skills said AI gives you. SUPERHOT: MIND CONTROL DELETE is the follow-up to that madness, a standalone game that maintains the empowering spirit while also adding some roguelike elements on top of new powers and scenarios. Backed by a quietly excellent story about the dangers of immersive technology, it’s a game with almost infinite replayability, especially if you’re dashing around and slicing heads in its VR version. Time speeds up when you move, leading to rooms becoming violent puzzles as you look to clear every red guy standing in your way. There haven’t been many indie games this past decade that have nailed their concept quite as well as 2016’s SUPERHOT, one of the most innovative shooters in years. |
